About

Derek is a writer & policy advisor based in Victoria, British Columbia

I've had a varied career path, which has included work in finance, manufacturing, healthcare, technology, and the British Columbia Public Service.

Currently, I work a 9-5 at the Ministry of Finance in the Financial and Corporate Sector Policy branch developing and implementing new legislation and regulations for the British Columbia real estate and securities markets.

In addition to my public policy work, I've run a solopreneur firm off the side of my desk for the past several years. For some time, this work has been picking up, and I'm slowly expanding my digital writing and advisory business in my spare time. Because of my background, education, and training, I've specialized in financial writing.

I hold a Master's degree in Public Administration as well as honours degrees in philosophy and marketing. I've also completed many courses and certificates over the past decade, some of these include:

  • Editing certificate (SFU)
  • Canadian Securities Course (CSI)
  • LEAN and project management courses (BCIT)
  • Various courses in urban land economics (UBC)
  • Adobe InDesign and Illustrator (BCIT)
  • Futures studies (Institute for the Future)

My writing and stories housed on this site are a collection of my thoughts, perspectives, and exploration of paradoxes and real life. I'm curious about how to live a good life and what it means to live a good life. I believe in fully developing oneself and becoming a multi-dimensional person.

I consider myself a generalizing specialist and continuously seek to build knowledge and technical skills in a host of different areas. Recently, I read a book called "Start Your Own F*cking Brand" which inspired me to start creating again. This website is an outgrowth of my renewed commitment to that process ✌︎.
